Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

To get you started our safari experts have assembled a list of frequently asked ones.

You can click the question’s title and the answer will expand below. And if we’ve missed one, just drop us an email and let us know what we missed.

What is the best time to travel?

The best time to visit Tanzania depends on what wildlife you’d like to spot. The country’s seasons and wildlife numbers are dictated by the rains, so you’ll have a slightly different experience depending on when you choose to visit.

Tanzania’s headline attraction is the Great Migration, which occurs year-round across the Serengeti. Many people flock here between July and September for a chance to witness huge herds of wildebeest and zebra crossing the Mara River — panic ensues as they try to avoid the jaws of crocodiles and other predators waiting to pounce. You’ll see lots of vehicles in the park at this time of year, though.

Tanzania’s ‘green season’, between November and March, is much quieter. While there’s a chance of rain showers, it’s a fantastic time for birdwatching as migratory species arrive in their thousands. You’ll also see Great Migration herds with their newly born calves.

The only time we tend to avoid Tanzania is between April and May, when heavy rains can disrupt wildlife viewing.

Do I need visas?

Tanzania requires all tourists to obtain a visa. Tourists belonging to certain countries are eligible for a visa on arrival. We recommend always getting a Tanzania e-visa beforehand to avoid unforeseen situations on arrival. Follow on if you’ve decided to go for the visa on arrival option! If you are to apply for a Tanzania visa, you have to apply beforehand to save complications, and you don’t have to worry about the entry requirements for Tanzania. It is possible to obtain a business or tourist visa at the main entry to Tanzania, but this is subject to immigration requirements and availability. If you could not provide proof of your return, your visa on arrival may be denied and you may be deported. You can now get a Tanzania visa in under 3 minutes on Atlys. Download the Atlys app on your iPhone, put in your travel details, and let Atlys handle all the paperwork for you. When you use Atlys, all the other paperwork such as entry forms and covid declarations are also taken care of!

What sort of food can I expect?

Tanzania is a country that offers many gems for travelers – the majestic Mt Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, and the pristine beaches of Zanzibar to name a few. But what many travelers often overlook on a trip through Tanzania is the food. Simple, filling and flavorful, what it fails to offer in flash, it will more than make up for in tasty, hearty goodness. But what about the food in Tanzania? It’s all about big flavors and hearty comfort food here, with amazing spices, heartwarming stews and perfectly barbecued meat. We dive into the delicious world of Tanzanian cuisine, including the best dishes to try, and some tips to stay well on your trip to Tanzania.

What immunizations are required?

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is only required for travelers 1 year of age and older coming from – or who are in airport transit for more than 12 hours within – a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission.

The vaccination requirement is imposed by this country for protection against Yellow Fever since the principal mosquito vector Aedes aegypti is present in its territory.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommend a malaria prophylactic (just to be on the safe side—contracting malaria is highly unlikely). You may also wish to review the CDC guidelines at http://www.cdc.gov/ or by calling 1-877-FYI-TRIP (1-877-394-8747).

We recommend contacting your physician well in advance of your departure to discuss these suggestions.

What is the minimum age for children?

Our family safaris are made for children, and other safaris can usually be tailored to accommodate any age. Depending on which country you wish to visit, situations can vary—so please contact us discuss which safari is right for you.

What type of clothing should I wear?

Suffice it to say, though, that your clothing should be comfortable and casual. Khaki, olive, brown and tan clothing increases your chances of seeing wildlife and offers the added benefit of concealing dirt. Since laundry service will be available in many of the places we visit, you should avoid the temptation to over-pack (and anyway, in most of Africa you will have a luggage weight limit of 33 pounds).
